Learning to ride a motorcycle is an exciting yet challenging experience, but with the right approach and mindset, you can confidently start your driving adventure. If you're eager to hit the road and embark on your driving journey, this guide is for you!
Follow these steps to get started on the road in no time:
1. Apply for the Theory Test - Category A
3. Complete IBT
4. Apply for the Motorcycle Driving Test
First step is to apply for the Theory Test, which will assess your knowledge of the Rules of the Road, hazard awareness and risk perception, . This will need some preparation and putting in the effort here will not only help you nail it first time but it's fundamental learning you'll need while riding your motorbike. There are Test Centre's all around the country so choose to attend where suits you.
When successful, you will receive a certificate which will allow you to apply for a Learner Permit.
Your application for the Learner Permit is processed and issued through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS). It allows you to learn to drive on public roads in Ireland and you must always have it with you when you are driving. You cannot drive on a public road until you have completed your IBT.
Motorcycle IBT, which stands for Motorcycle Initial Basic Training, is a mandatory program introduced by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). It's primary goal is to ensure that beginner motorcyclists acquire basic riding skills and knowledge to drive a motorbike safely.
The IBT must be delivered by an RSA registered Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
When you come to us for your IBT Training we'll help you settle in - there will be loads of knowledge and experience mixed with some good humour. We match your pace of learning and make sure safety is top of the list.
Finally, after completing the IBT, you can then apply for the Driving Test at RSA.ie. The test will assess your practical driving skills and determine if you are ready to become a licensed motorcyclist. By following these steps, you will be well on your way to hitting the road in no time.
Just to mention! It's well worthwhile to book a Pretest a couple of weeks ahead of your scheduled test - don't put yourself under additional pressure by winging it on the day (you know who you are 😁). Tests can be a bit daunting at the best of times so why not give yourself the best chance with a bit of prep.
🚩Remember the 6 Month Rule!
If this is your first Learners Permit you cannot take your Driving Test until 6 months has passed.
🚩IBT Certificate of Competency!
While riding your bike remember to carry your IBT Competency Certificate + Driver Permit and wear your L-vest.
